XDO Blockhouse

XDO stands for Extended Defences Officer. His job was to supervise the firing of controlled minefields in the estuary to protect the harbour entrance during WW2. Because of this building’s remote location it required loopholes (embrasures) for small arms for its defence.
The XDO was commanded by a Naval officer responsible for all Naval activity in a given area. He controlled the minefield, boom nets, signals and was liaison between the R.N. and the Army at Landguard's inner batteries and Port War Signal Station on the roof of the fort. -Geograph.
