chapel, abandoned / shut down, NRHP - National Register of Historic Places, lutheran church/kirk, religious organisation
Historic former Lutheran chapel and mission post listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP).
Built: c. 1911 (chapel); c. 1912 (parsonage - currently in ruins); c. 1935 (school - located on west side of road, destroyed by fire in 1980, now only a foundation)
Closed: 1974
Architect: Rev. Otto P. Schoenberg
Architectural style: Vernacular
Areas of significance: Architecture; Education; Religion
Area: 2.152 acres
Also known as: Cibecue Mission School
Date added to NRHP: 3/5/2002
Notes: This Lutheran mission represents one of the earliest efforts to convert the area's Apache Native American population to Christianity. Though most of the structures are either destroyed or in deteriorated condition, the site is valuable as a representation of early 20th century interaction between local Native populations and Anglo pioneers. The chapel is located at the southern edge of the property on the east side of the road, with ruins of the parsonage immediately to the northeast. The foundation of the former school is directly across the road from the chapel. Other sites on the property include an orchard to the east of the chapel and a small pump house near the school ruins.
