Half way between Globe and Show Low is a deep canyon with the Salt River at the bottom. The paved road decends from high plateaus into the canyon, then twists and turns back up the other end. It's not very long, but the view is spectacular, and the ride if you're on a motorcycle can be incredible. Be sure to stop at the bottom, and at the view points near the top of each side of the canyon. No services.

  • Traveling from north to south, there is a dirt road along the river, leaving the main road right at the bridge going downstream (to the right before crossing the bridge.) This is a good place to camp in an otherwise barren camping zone. The land is Indian land, and the fee to camp is $15. It is a self-pay system. There are 3 campgrounds (Campground #1, Campground #2, Campground #3) in the first 4 miles. The first 2 have primitive toilets. At mile 4 there is a difficult creek ford, then several more miles of road with other places to camp.
