Bon Harbor Hills are a set of hills north west of Owensboro that stand alone from the rest of the river lowlands on the west side of the county. The area was mined extensively, with Owensboro natives founding the settlement of Bon Harbor at the banks of the Ohio River. Robert Triplett, a Virginian who arrived in the area during the 1820s to open several coal mines founded the town at the landing in 1842. He called it Bon Harbor for the natural harbor there and built textile factories and homes for the workers. Bon Harbor post office was established April 17, 1848, but lasted only 2 years. The Riverport Industrial District now stands where the settlement was originally, meaning there is no remnants.
