Notes: This site served as a base camp for renowned eco-biologist Clinton Hart Merriam beginning in 1889. From this location, Merriam studied and formed theories concerning the phenomenon he called "Life Zones". The theory put forth the idea that plant and animal life is distributed in specific patterns depending on altitudinal and climatic zones.
