The medieval settlement and castle of Pteleos was located across the bay from ancient Pteleon to the southwest. The site changed hands several times after the Fourth Crusade in 1204, and was an isolated Venetian outpost on the Greek mainland until taken by the Ottoman Turks in 1470.
