Az-Zour North Independent Water and Power Project (IWPP) phase 1 is located at Az-Zour, approximately 100km south of Kuwait City. The desalination plant will comprise a multiple-effect distillation (MED) unit capable of producing 107 million imperial gallons per day (MIGD) (486,400m³/d) of drinking water, which is equivalent to 20% of Kuwait's installed water treatment capacity.
The desalination plant is being built along with a gas-fired 1,500MW combined cycle power plant. The construction works for the desalination plant and the integrated power plant are expected to be completed by 2016.
The treated water and the power produced from the complex will be supplied to the country's national power and water grid operator Kuwait Ministry of Electricity and Water (MEW) under a 40-year long-term Energy Conversion and Water Purchase Agreement (ECWPA).
