The Barakah nuclear power plant is planned to be the first NPP in the UAE. The plant itself is a imported model from South Korea. The first activities at the site begun in 2011, the construction of the first reactor unit is planned for 2012. Official commission date is in 2018.

By the way: the water intake for main water desalination plants in Ruwais is only 40km away. Imagine what will happen to water supply of Abu Dhabi if there is a cooling water spill with radiactive conatinated water. Think its not possible? Remember Fukushima...
