The lot was purchased in the 1930s after the merger of William A. Fox Studios and 20th Century Pictures. Until the 1950s the new company operated from three locations: the original Fox lot on Western in Hollywood, the Fox Ranch in Malibu Canyon, and here in West L.A. This area was Fox's backlot area where they shot many a western, war movie, small town dramas and comedies, and Shirley Temple movies.
This lot was bought from cowboy star Tom Mix, who used it as his personal ranch.
In th 1960s like the rest of the industry, and due to the failure of "Cleopatra," a film that was supposed to be a blockbuster, Fox was forced to sell this backlot to stay solvent.
