place with historical importance, film/video production studio/facility, historical layer / disappeared object
In 1924, after buying out Samuel Goldwyn and merging with Metro Pictures, Louis B. Mayer's Mayer Productions moved the combine to the Goldwyn lot in Culver City and expanded to this footprint. Over the ensuing decades Mayer expanded to fill this entire block (including property to the northeast) as well as 5 other "backlots" in this Culver City neighborhood. For many years M-G-M was the largest movie studio in the world.
