place with historical importance, neighbourhood
Originally known as Windsor Crest, Brookside was developed on land formerly part of Rancho Las Cienegas (Ranch of the Marshland) and owned by Don Francisco Avila. It took its name from El Rio del Jardin de las Flores, a small stream which flows year round from Hollywood Hills, south between Highland and Longwood to Ballona Creek, and eventually the Pacific Ocean. Even though the most luxurious homes in this 1920s-era tract were built along the stream, the developers preserved the natural landscape around it.
