Gravesite of D. W. Griffith

USA / Kentucky / Buckner /

Griffith, considered the father of the motion picture, was a native of Oldham County, Kentucky. He was a renowned and very famous movie maker at the turn of the 20th Century. Griffith invented many movie techniques, including the traveling shot, the close-up, rapid editing, deep focus, and more. He created many movie stars including Mary Pickford, and Dorothy and Lillian Gish. His most famous movies were "The Birth of a Nation," "intolerance," and "Broken Blossoms."

For all his fame, glory, and wealth, Griffith died in poverty and obscurity in a resident hotel in Hollywood. Once the silent period passed, he lost his magic, and was forgotten by the industry he helped to invent.
