Willie, a Berkeley, California resident and proprietor of Taylor's Trunk Shop, succumbed to a heart attack during an expedition down the Colorado river in 1956. Honoring his last wish he was laid to rest by his friends in an ad hoc grave located in a small side-canyon below the Eminence Break camps at Mile 44 1/2. Willie is one of only two known Grand Canyon river runners buried in the Canyon. Peter M. Hansbrough, who died July 15, 1889, on the Brown/Stanton Expedition, is buried just upstream from Willie. There is a marker over Willie's grave that reads: "Willie Wilson Beigle Taylor. December 27, 1896 - June 6, 1956. He loved the mighty rock and water structures of the Grand Canyon and all the creatures that lived there. Grand Canyoneer 1949 1950 1951 1954."
