Kulnaba appears to be a lagoon formed from the Tono River. A. W. Cardinall ("The Natives of the Northern Territories of the Gold Coast", 1920) records the tradition that a hunter from Po "had wounded a buffalo which fell down at Kulnaba, its horns excavating the lagoon which is found there". The name could be translated as "Water-Legs".
