city, capital city of state/province/region, capital city of country

Accra is the capital and largest city (by population) of Ghana. It is also the capital of the Greater Accra Region, with which it is coterminous. Accra is the anchor city of the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area. Its area is 173 sq km (67 sq mi) and its populaiton is 2,300,000.

The area was first settled by the Ga people in the 1400s. Accra gained status as a centre for the slave trade when Europeans constructed forts in Accra during the 1600s. After being captured by the British in 1873, it replaced Cape Coast as the capital of the British Gold Coast colony in 1877, and the city began to expand afterwards. When Ghana became an independent naiton in 1957, Accra was declared its capital. In the present day, Accra in centred around the original Ga town and the British, Danish, and Dutch forts. Throughout its history, immigration from rural areas caused Accra to expand with no regard to zoning, giving it a sprawled attribute.

Accra is officially divided into four geographical regions and eleven sub-metropolitan areas, and officially has 50 neighbourhoods. Owing to its location in the Dahomey Gap, Accra features a tropical savanna climate that borders on a semi-arid climate. The city is served by Kotoka International Airport. It is a major centre for manufacturing, marketing, finance, insurance, transportation, tourism, and culture.
