This house is labeled on the 1861 Hopkins-Corey map as “C. A. Demarest,” on the 1876 Pease-Walker map as “E.B. Sturges,” and on the 1902 Robinson map as “John Behnke.” The original house post-dates 1840 as no house is shown at this location on the 1840 Coast Survey map. Alterations to the house from circa 1900 were likely done by the Behnke family. The original structure had Greek Revival styling (as revealed in an early photo). The far eastern end of the structure was likely a free-standing out-kitchen that was joined to the main structure.
