Formed in 1884, Roe Stephens Manufacturing made fire hydrants at a factory located on Michigan Avenue at 27th Street. It was a successor to the firm of Stephens Scott Co. In 1905 it acquired the factory of the defunct Michigan Brass & Iron Works at Clayton Street and Parkinson Street which enabled it to greatly expand its business.
The Clayton Street factory produced Scott pop safety valves, Goldsmith throttle valves, Scott gate valves, angle, globe and check valves. The Michigan Avenue plant continued to produce fire hydrants. By the 1920s the company's name was changed to Roe Stephens Manufacturing.
