In the 1790's four cotton mills were built along the banks of the Gryffe and various dams and mill lakes were constructed to turn the water wheels and drive the spinning machines. The last of the cotton mills ceased production in 1876 and companies involved in the tanning and working of leather and other skins which had been carried on in the village since the 1770's took over a number of the old buildings. Bridge of Weir acquired a fine reputation for both the tanning and the working of leather and other animal skins and this reputation is upheld to this day by the Bridge of Weir Leather Company which is still based in the village.

It is a tributary of The White Cart Water
