Fort L'Huillier Historical Marker

USA / Minnesota / Skyline /

The road side historical marker for the fort built by the French explorer Pierre Le Sueur in 1700-1702, believed to have been originally atop the abutting bluff (now private land). The marker itself appears to have been moved to the bottom of the hill at some point, as historical pictures from the 1920's show it placed in an open field.

Le Sueuer believed the blue-green clay he found along the bluffs in this area contained copper, and set up camp here to mine the clay for further study. He hauled two tons of the clay all the way back to France only to find out that it did not contain copper.

The fort was in place for two years, before being abandoned after scuffles with the Dakota and Fox Indians in the area.
