At 6 pm on Friday, October 22, 1976 the Arcade was demolished by a consortium led by the Battelle Memorial Institute to make way for a new convention center. This despite the arcade having been listed on the National Register of Historic Places two years earlier. The demolition was timed to turn the building into rubble before preservationists could act.
