Originally built as a wooden school in 1882, the Madison School burned down in 1907 and was replaced by this brick building the same year. The school also served as a community center for the neighborhood. The former school is now the Seaway building and is one of the few landmarks left over from the old Garfield Avenue neighborhood, after construction of the Blatnik Bridge was approved in the late 1950s. When the bridge opened in 1961, the neighborhood was gone.
