The grounds embrace 14.6 hectares (36 acres) including a rare Garry Oak ecosystem and 14 acres of formal gardens. The grounds are open daily to the public from dawn to dusk, free of charge, though some areas (such as the woodlands and the Ballroom Terraces) may only be accessed by guided tours.

Scenes from the 2004 comedy White Chicks starring Marlon & Shawn Wayans, directed by Keenen Ivory Wayans were filmed on location. The front of Government House was transformed into the fictional Royal Hamptons Hotel; interior shots of the hotel were filmed downtown at the Fairmont Empress & Victoria Conference Centre.
