George William Kelham designed Bowles Hall, a dormitory for men, in the Collegiate Gothic architectural style which flourished on college campuses during this period. When dedicated in 1929, Bowles Hall was the first residence hall on the Berkeley campus.
It was Bowlesmen, themselves, who worked to add Bowles to the National Register in order to improve its odds of survival.
