The oldest of the DOE's National Laboratories, the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory pioneered nuclear weapons and energy technology and is currently administered by the University of California, through a contract from the Federal Government. Although the Laboratory was involved in the WW II Manhattan Project, LBNL has conducted unclassified scientific research as its main mission since the early 1950s, and as its exclusive mission since the 1970s.
