You can always pan gold here and expect to get something. Abandoned hard rock mine one block from bridge on North side of the Middle Fork. You are on the old stage route to Alleghany. The road was built from the bottom up instead of grading into the hillside. Be careful because the river has been known to rise 27 feet in 10 minutes with heavy rains up river. There use to be a overhead cable box for
crossing the river during flooding. The bridge has been washed out several times.
