electrical substation, Art Deco (architecture)
2-story Art-Deco electrical substation completed in 1917. It is clad in light brown brick, with a large roll-down garage door in the center of the ground level. Two very large brick piers are located at the ends of the facade, and a very large 75-pane expanse of window takes up the center of the 2nd level. Above, there is patterned brickwork and a stone band course below the roof parapet with its stone coping. The substation was built to support the IRT subway, but was closed in 1991, although it remained an important backup in the case of failure.
