Telangana (Telugu: తెలంగాణ) is a state in southern India.

In ancient times, the region now known as Telangana was ruled by multiple major Indian powers such as the Cholas, Mauryans, Satavahanas, Chalukyas and Kakatiyas. It later was ruled by Delhi Sultanate, Bahmani Sultanate, Golconda Sultanate and Mughals. It was later ruled by the Nizams until 1948, when it joined the Union of India.

In 1956, Hyderabad state was dissolved and Andhra State was merged with Telangana region from state of Hyderabad to form the state of Andhra Pradesh in India.

On 2 June 2014, Telangana became the 29th state of India, consisting of the parts carved out of the ten north-western districts of the erstwhile state of Andhra Pradesh. The city of Hyderabad will serve as the joint capital of Telangana and the residuary Andhra Pradesh for maximum ten years.
