Dia:Chelsea Museum (New York City, New York)

USA / New Jersey / Hoboken / New York City, New York / West 22nd Street, 535-545

Three connected buildings housing the Dia Center for the Arts. The main building was completed in 1913 as a manufacturing building. It is clad in dark red brick, with diamond-shaped stone ornaments above the 2nd and 3rd floor windows at the outer and center bays. Narrow brick belt courses connect the window sills.

In 2011 the Dia Center bought the 1-story buildings at 541 & 545 West 22nd, and hired architect Roger Duffy to design new 1-story and 3-story buildings to connect with the existing building at No. 535.

Dia Center for the Arts is a multi-disciplinary contemporary arts organization. It was established in 1974; the name “Dia”, taken from the Greek word meaning “through”, was chosen to suggest the institution’s role in enabling artistic projects that might not otherwise be realized.
