St. Peter's Episcopal Church Rectory

USA / New Jersey / Hoboken / West 20th Street, 346

This 2-story Greek-revival rectory for St. Peter's Church was originally built as the chapel, in 1832. Its design is based on a sketch by Clement Clark Moore. It is three bays wide, clad in red brick with stone sills and lintels, and a stone cornice and fascia. The original design of the chapel was later altered and today brick pilasters, running the height of the building, replace the Doric columns, but, with this exception, it is quite close to the original plan.

The building is set back behind iron fencing with rusticated stone posts topped by stone urns. A gate in the middle accesses the central entrance, which has paneled black wooden double-doors and a transom with rope moldings. The brick piers around the three bays are projected slightly forward.

The east facade is clad in lighter brick, and has five single-windows on the ground floor (plus another, smaller window) and three somewhat smaller windows on the 2nd floor, with the cornice wrapping around the corner. In 1841, it became the rectory, which it remains today.
