The building is located in the historic center of Cagli (PU) .
The current Public Palace overlooks the eighteenth-century Piazza Matteotti and includes those who in the past were two different buildings , that is the Grand Palace , the seat of the judiciary, and the Palazzo del Podesta, both built after the translation of the city.
In 1476 the Grand Palace was given to Federico II da Montefeltro , Duke of Urbino ; it certainly was , both inside and outside , very different from what can be seen today and had some similarities to the Palazzo dei Consoli in Gubbio.
Access to the main front had to be very raised above the square , as shown by the position of the windows on the first floor ( now walled up ) and the position of the jambs of the portal.
The Duke arranged to be restored to the ancient palace probably resorting to Francesco di Giorgio Martini, who a few years later he designed the famous Rock .
The main entrance was lowered at the current level and, consequently, were also moved to the plans . In 1612, at the behest of the Duke Francesco Maria II was demolished the fifteenth-century loggia .
In 1631 the Judiciary takes possession of the Palazzo Pubblico which thus returns to the town of Cagli despite the claims of the heirs of the Dukes of Urbino. The terrible earthquake of 1781 severely lesionò the Public Palace .
The wall of the main front in regular ashlar stone carnelian , still shows the existence of what were the medieval arched windows of the first and second floor , the latter connected by a carved frame .
A large balcony with a central statue of the Madonna and Child (1860 ) placed within a deep niche , overlooking Piazza Matteotti . The central part of the main front is embellished by the bell tower , all made of brick , which stands under the clock dated MDLXXV field , built by stonemasons Scipio and Giambattista Final. Are still visible at the sides of the corbels of the fifteenth-century loggia , while on the right side we can see the ancient unit of measurement of the surface : the barrel, arm and foot .
