industrial building
Add category
2-story industrial building completed in 1915 for the Manhattan Gas Light Company. The utilitarian structure is clad in dark-grey-painted brick, and originally housed gas tanks. The section extending to 17th Street is clad in blue tiles. Manhattan Gas Light was one of six New York gas companies that merged into the Consolidated Gas Company. In 1936 it was renamed Consolidated Edison Company of New York, today known as Con Edison, which is still a natural gas provider for much of the city. The building is now occupied by Verizon Wireless.
