The Umbro - Etruscan necropolis is located in the town of San Lorenzo , in the municipality of Montecchio (TR).
Vast open-air archaeological site of great interest : the necropolis of about 3,000 graves of the Umbrian-Etruscan civilization dates from the sixth to fourth centuries . B.C. located to the west of Parma, meeting along the hills that slope down towards the Tiber River, a short distance from the confluence with one of its major tributaries, the Straw .
Given the breadth of the cemetery - that affects the lower slopes of the hills of San Lorenzo , an old farm of Copio I and II and the Farm of Raia - is almost certain to exist in the area of an ancient settlement (perhaps I copy ) on the banks of the Tiber , however, has not yet been located. the frequent discovery of fragments of pottery and bricks of various ages on the narrow plain of Copio , that overlooks the gorges of the St. Lawrence and the ditch of Raia , suggests plausible location in the place of the village , whose limits historical - taken on the basis of materials - the same as those of the necropolis , between the sixth and fourth sec.aC The site is then superimposed on a rustic Roman settlement , as shown by the remains of common ceramic and sealed the first imperial age .
" The graves are developed along the slopes of the hills sloping down to the river , on different levels , and evidently the sides of roads that sailed along the edges. Burial chamber is dug in the ground. In the majority of cases are preceded by a slightly sloping dromos , closed the door to the tomb , formed from a slab of travertine. The room has a square shape , with a flat ceiling or slightly ridged and is fitted on the sides and bottom of the docks obtained in the same Matile and intended for deposition respectively of the bodies and kits. [...] the excavation of the graves along the ditch San Lorenzo returned a significant amount of accompanying written materials , even in part tampered with the repeated illegal actions followed over the years . [.. . ] among the metals, should be mentioned the various tools for the preparation and cooking of food and for the banquet , frequent in the tombs of the Etruscan and Italic among the higher social strata ; ceramics are among the many notable kylikes Attic , which although not of very high quality show the frequency of movement of goods , however, expensive . Products Volsinian environment are buccheri , found in large quantities, and Etruscan pottery painted by the Group of Orvieto " .1 The materials recovered are on display at Antiquarian Hall of tongs .
