HB Studio Acting School

USA / New Jersey / Hoboken / Bank Street, 120

3-story Greek-revival school/office building completed in 1836. The original stoop and entranceway have been removed to provide for a first floor commercial studio. The renovated first floor retains its original cast iron columns supporting a continuous iron beam decorated with rosettes. Although one window oh the left side of each of the upper floors has been bricked-up, the remaining two windows: of each story retain their Greek Revival lintels and sills. This building is topped by an elaborately detailed Neo-Grec cornice supported by fluted brackets with modillions between them with dentiled molding below.

In 1945, HB Studio opened in this building, founded by Herbert Berghof and Uta Hagen. This acting school has dozens of famous alumni, including Rod Steiger, Jason Robards, Jack Lemmon, Faye Dunaway, Robert De Niro, Harvey Keitel, Sigourney Weaver, Anne Bancroft, Matthew Broderick, Al Pacino, Christopher Reeve, Bette Midler, Eva Marie Saint and Sarah Jessica Parker.
