36-40 Bank Street

USA / New Jersey / Hoboken / Bank Street, 36-40
townhouses, Greek Revival (architecture), 1850s construction

A trio of 3-story Greek-revival residential buildings completed together in 1851 as rowhouses. Originally the row consisted of four houses, including No. 42, later replaced by an apartment house. The Bank Street houses, which conform to the pattern established by the earlier row to the east, are approached by high stoops leading to attractive Greek Revival doorways of brownstone with "eared" frames.

Nos. 36 and 38 have their doorways placed next to each other and are united by a cornice surmounted by a low pediment. No. 36 retains its original floor-length French windows at parlor floor level. The windows all have cornices above the lintels. The elaborate Neo-Grec bracketed roof cornices, crowning the three houses, date from the Eighteen-seventies when the buildings were altered. No. 40 has exterior blinds, added at a later date, on all the windows.
