The actual site of the original mill

USA / California / Placerville /
place with historical importance, historic site

Standing at the spot it appears that this is actually where the original mill stood. Since the water flowed under and through the mill, and this spot is clearly a former channel for the flow of water, it is my speculation that the mill was here, not the spot to the east where the monument is. It is a man-made channel. The mill would have been constructed along side the river and the flow of water diverted to the mill. It would have been impossible to build the mill in the river. The site of the monument has no channel for water.

I invite you to walk this piece of land and see for yourself.

As of 10-18-14 a new and presumable replacement) replica is being constructed at this site.
