Maxwell Butte is one of the many glaciated Pleistocene cinder cones in the Oregon Cascades. Its summit is 6229 feet above sea level. In 1933 the Forest Service built a fire lookout stood on the summit; it was destroyed in 1965. A good trail leads from Forest Road 080 to the summit, passing Twin Lakes on the way.
