 mountain, volcano, summit

Mount Washington is a shield volcano about 3 miles (5 km) in diameter. It's summit stands 7794 ft. (2376 meters) above sea level. The volcano is "probably less than a few hundred thousand" years old, according to the Oregon State University summary description. The most recent eruption on the Mount Washington shield occurred 1,330 years ago.The summit cone has been eroded and the central plug of lava now forms the mountain's main pinnacle. Yellow and red cinder deposits, basalt flows, and lava dikes are evident in the ridges around the main pinnacle. The most common climbing route follows the northwest ridge; the route is very exposed and involves class 4-5 scrambling.
