Corvallis is a city in and the county seat of Benton County, Oregon, United States. The population was 54,462 at the 2010 census.
Corvallis was first settled by Joseph Avery in 1845. The settlement was named Marysville in 1849, likely after French fur trappers' name for a local peak, named for the Virgin Mary. The city's name was changed to Corvallis after the Latin "cor vallis," meaning "heart of the valley."
The city briefly served as territorial capital in 1855 until Salem was chosen as the permanent capital. Corvallis was incorporated as a city in 1857.
