500 West 48th Street (New York City, New York)

USA / New Jersey / West New York / New York City, New York / West 48th Street, 500
 laundromat, apartment building

4-story residential building completed in 1884. It is clad in dark red-painted brick, above a black metal-and-glass storefront on the east facade. The upper floors facing the avenue have four bays of single-windows with joined brown stone sills and lintels joined at the shoulders. A black iron fire escape runs down the middle two bays of the facade, which is crowned by a black metal roof cornice with brackets and panels, and a round gable at the center, encompassing the initials DP, and the date 1911.

The longer north facade on 48th Street has a short return of the storefront at the east end. The west end has another commercial space, with three large plate-glass windows to the right of a smaller, narrow window and a glass door atop a ramp. Next to these is the entrance to the upper floors, with a glass door, sidelight, and transom. Above is a pair of brown stone console brackets and a small cornice. To the left were originally five openings, with two windows, a service door, and two taller windows; only the first window remains (the other openings are filled in), but each window opening retains a curved brown stone lintel. The upper floors have nine bays of single-windows with flat brown stone sills and lintels. The 2nd floor also has a very small window at the center, above the doorway. The roof cornice continues onto this facade, but with no round gable; brick chimneys rise a short distance above the cornice.

The ground floor is occupied by a laundromat, and Fairytale Lounge.
