City and Country School

USA / New Jersey / Hoboken / West 13th Street, 144-148

4-story school building originally completed in 1842 as the three westernmost rowhouses of the Remsen row. Remodeled in 1940 by architect John C.B. Moore and raised in height to provide more space for the City and Country School, they still have red brick facades, but they are are unified at the top by a continuous level stone coping across the front walls of all three houses. At the former No. 148 there are two large studio windows of steel at the third floor and a small extension projecting forward at street level.

The City and Country School offers grade K-8. It was founded in 1914 by Caroline Pratt and Lucy Sprague Mitchell, who helped start The New School; actor Matthew Broderick is a graduate.
