The interior has three naves divided by pillars , with a basilica plan . Its present appearance dates back to the renewal in 1571 by Galeazzo Alessi , sometimes just above the traces of the early church , including the remains of a dome.
Following restoration the side altars were removed , and discover , on the left wall sections of a Roman wall . Currently , there are ten in the cathedral , alternating with statues of prophets of Agostino Silva 1672. The frescoes in the apse and the vault are his , Giacomo Giorgetti (1663) and Giovanni Antonio Grecolini (XVIII century). Previously these were placed in a Roman sarcophagus carved, still visible in the crypt. The sacristy is accessed through a small door to the left in an underground chapel called St. Francis.
