2.5-story Federal-style building housing the restaurant One If By Land, Two If By Sea, completed in 1834 as a house for Thomas Cox. The building was purchased by Michael Hallanan in 1897, who tore down the neighboring house to build a stable, and renovated No. 17 as his horseshoeing & blacksmith operation. An immense arched opening with double carriage doors was installed that engulfed the basement and parlor floors and the horsewalk became the entrance to the upstairs living quarters.

Half a century later, in 1973, the former blacksmith shop was converted to a restaurant, One If By Land, Two If By Sea, which still operates here today. The decor features candlelit tables, two fireplaces, and a baby grand piano. The classic menu has been noted for its signature dish, Beef Wellington. It is often cited as the most romantic restaurant in New York City.
