The Foundling Center / The Sixth Avenue Elementary School PS 340

USA / New Jersey / West New York / Sixth Avenue (Avenue of the Americas), 590
 office building, school

191-foot, 15-story postmodern institutional & school building completed in 1988. Designed by Perkins-Eastman, it is faced in red brick with a black granite water table. At the 3rd-5th floors, the outer windows in each bay are recessed. There is a setback above the 6th floor on both facades, and further small setbacks at the north side of the tower.

The 6-story base has four main bays on the west facade, and six along the north facade, with green metal window framing. The top floors rise mostly from the west side of the base, with some small setbacks along the north end.

The Foundling Hospital was an orphanage founded in 1869 on the Upper East Side. It moved here in 1988 to take advantage of lower real estate costs. In 2014 The Sixth Avenue Elementary School also opened in the lower six floors of the building. The New York Foundling organization continues to use the upper floors, focusing on supporting special-needs children.
