production, lime kiln

A lime manufacturing facility where limestone (calcium carbonate) arrives by boat from quarries in Rogers City, Mi, Gulliver, Mi, and Manitoulin Island, Ontario. It is then calcined by two 300 ft. long rotary lime kilns to produce quick lime or calcium oxide. The kilns, fired by coal and natural gas heat the lime to 2,200 degrees Fahrenheit.
Each kiln can produce up to 500-550 tons of lime per day. Customers and uses include steel mills, water treatment and gas desulfurization.
