office building, high-rise, movie / film / TV location, 1917_construction, Neo-Renaissance (architecture)
215-foot, 16-story Neo-Renaissance office building completed in 1917. Designed by Schwartz & Gross as a store-and-loft building, it has a 3-story stone base, with a tan brick-faced shaft rising above. The Broadway facade spans five bays, with four bays on 21st Street. At the base, the stone piers sit on tall plinths and have Corinthian capitals; the ground-floor storefronts have show windows with transoms, some with the original leaded glass. The southern bay on the avenue side contains a recessed entrance with brass doors, grey granite surround, rope molding, scrolled brackets and a carved entablature with a rounded pediment featuring cherubs and garlands. The eastern bay on 1st Street has a service entrance with a much simpler stone surround and metal vents. Above this entrance, this narrower bay on the 2nd & 3rd floors is subdivided by three stone pillars. The rest of the bays all have tripartite windows with brown metal frames, and transoms on the 2nd floor. The stone spandrels between floors are decorated with central circles. The base is capped by a dentiled cornice.
The 4th floor is brick, with incised panels between the bays of paired windows. A terra-cotta band course with wave motif and acanthus leaves sets off the upper floors, which also have simple, paired windows. The 13th floor is framed at the top and bottom by stone band courses. The floors above have projecting central portions of the piers, which are crowned by Corinthian capitals and a terra-cotta parapet at the 16th floor.
Early tenants of the building included companies specializing in laces, embroideries and decorative upholstery.
The ground floor is occupied by Zaro's restaurant, and Brio NYC restaurant. It served as a filming location for "The Devil Wears Prada" (2006).
