Situated on the corner of Shirland Road and Elgin Avenue, the Warwick Farm Dairy building dates from 1886. Established by the Welford family, who were dairymen to Queen Victoria from 1876, it was the model dairy of its time. By the 1890’s the dairy processed the milk of over 100 farms and employed around 450 personnel, some of who lived on site in purpose built flats.
The company was bought by United Dairies in 1915/16, who then became Unigate in 1959. The building became known as Unigate House until they closed down in 1983. The building has now been incorporated into a redevelopment of shops, flats and businesses such as the Institute of Psychoanalysis, but it still retains its original distinctive red brick facade.
