The company was founded in 1975 by Phua Sin Loke who originally opened his first store at Jalan Masjid India. From modest beginnings selling brass instruments, woodwinds, violins, guitars and pianos, the company has grown to become a favourite destination for musicians. In 1970s, the explosion of Rock 'n' Roll signalled a transforming moment in the development of new music gear. During this time, the company caught the rising demand for musical instruments. In 1981, due to its success, Bentley Music acquired its own building at its current location in Bukit Bintang, launching a 4-storey super store with a 20,000-square-foot showroom.

Bentley Music has a long history in the music industry in Malaysia and is associated with some of the most recognised brands in music. As the leading musical instrument and sound reinforcement distributor and retailer since 1975, it has built up a formidable reputation as the largest importer and sole distributor of some of the world's top instrument brands in the country. This store once claimed to be "the largest music store" in Malaysia and became a landmark in its own right. Based on the success of this store, the company built a devoted customer base; and in 2010 was looking for new ways to expand its business.
