Established in 1889, Pudu was originally a town in its own right but is today absorbed as part of Kuala Lumpur. Spelled "Pudoh" during the British colonial era, while the locals call Pudu "Poon San Pah" in Cantonese, which means "semi-developed forest". A century ago the district was under-developed and remote, covered with jungle. Today, Pudu is no longer the remote area that people used to know. Over time, it has grown to become a vibrant and colourful place with character. It is home to temples, shophouses, and historical buildings. Some old facades have been replaced by modern structures. Development is taking shape and weaving into the lives of Pudu community.

There used to be a river here known in Cantonese as "tai sui hum". Pudu residents had to cross it to go to Imbi. There is no other name for it today as it has disappeared from sight; it is designated as part of an underground drainage system. Parts of it can be glimpsed at the Stormwater Management and Road Tunnel (www.smarttunnel.com.my/) nearby. Nevertheless, "tai sui hum" existed and still does, albeit underground. These gradual transformations may not catch the public's attention but these are signs of changing times.
