This is an old commercial centre with significant Chinese population. The district is named after "Imbi", an indigenous tribe (or Orang Asli) that once lived in the area hundred of years ago. Before the coming of Malay and Chinese settlers to the area, the Imbi thought that they were spirits, but upon examining the result of one of them going to the bathroom in the bush, they announced that they had proof they were human: "Their look is different... but their shit smells just like ours." Today, the area has been Kuala Lumpur's most prominent retail belt that is home to many landmark shopping centres.
