The Locomotive Repair Shop was constructed in 1921 to house repair and maintenance facilities for Ford's fleet of locomotives. In 1937, the Rouge plant had 110 miles of track and 16 locomotives including 2 diesels.

In addition to repairing locomotives and rolling stock the shop serviced other heavy equipment such as steam cranes, bulldozers, shovels and coal unloaders.
